Information Technology Act, 2000 (Act 21 of 2000), enacted 9 June 2000 by the Parliament of India. Foundational cyber-and-electronic-records statute giving legal recognition to digital signatures and electronic transactions, defining cybercrime offences, and (via the IT (Amendment) Act 2008) inserting §70B which designates the Indian Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-In) as the national agency for cyber-incident response, threat coordination and emergency measures. Implementing rules include the IT (Reasonable Security Practices and Procedures) Rules 2011, the IT Intermediary Guidelines and Digital Media Ethics Code Rules 2021, and the IT Amendment Rules on SGI 2026.
